Are you maximizing your discounts for home and auto insurance?

Posted on February 21, 2012 by

There are a few simple things that can be done to maximize your discounts on auto and home insurance.  First  and foremost is being financially responsible.  People with high credit scores pay far less for insurance.  Insurers like Travelers, Kemper Preferred, Allied, and Hartford discount insurance rates the most for high credit scores.  You might be surprised at your rate if you haven’t received a quote from them.  Second, always combine your home and auto insurance when possible.  Third, many insurers give an advance quote discount (8 days or more) so plan ahead when shopping for insurance.  Finally, there are miscellaneous discounts given for security alarms, being claims free, multi-car, newer homes or purchasing a home, etc.  However, the first three discounts are the biggest driver of insurance discounts because after that, it really comes down to the insurers’ rates.  Typically any other discount besides the first three are a sales gimmick used to train your brain into thinking that it’s not possible to get a better rate anywhere else.  If you are claims free and have good credit, take advantage of the great rates that are available for you!

Did you know?

Travelers Insurance sold the first auto policy in 1898 to Dr. Truman Martin.  The policy provided $10,000 of liability coverage for $11.25/year.  Travelers continues the tradition today with ConciergeClaim service that offers rental car at their preferred body shop.  For Travelers clients utilizing ConciergeClaim, they have a 99% satisfaction rate and 90% would recommend Travelers to others.

Umbrella

Posted on January 27, 2012 by

There’s more than a few people that think an umbrella is only for a rainy day.  Insurance wise, if you need an umbrella, it ended up being far worse than a rainy day; it’s a catastrophic day that can cause financial ruin.  That’s where an umbrella policy for your insurer comes in.  It comes in million dollar increments and adds additional liability coverage over your home and auto coverage.  Additionally, a good umbrella offers broader coverage that your home and auto like personal injury protection (i.e. libel, slander, invasion of privacy, etc.).  You’re a great candidate for an umbrella if you have good income or asset levels in excess of your auto/home liability limits, or you have children.  If something bad were to happen to someone’s child when they were over playing, all bets are off as to how much liability you could have and how far the other parent(s) will push it.  Coverage is typically inexpensive (~$125-250/yr.) depending on your household characteristics and is a great way to protect your assets and give your attorneys the financial wherewithal to negotiate a settlement.
It’s surprising that 30 years ago a million umbrella was the most common umbrella and that’s still true today.  However, due to large jury awards, umbrellas are needed more often than ever.  Many people don’t realize that a lot of O.J. Simpson’s and Bill Clinton’s legal costs were paid by their umbrella policies.

New Homeowners coverage from Allied

Posted on November 16, 2011 by

Allied Insurance just rolled out Advanced Home Protection coverage in Missouri.  Many insurers offer some sort of extended coverage on the dwelling.  Allied’s new endorsement offers uncapped dwelling replacement giving you the ultimate peace of mind.  Additionally, the endorsement includes mortgage protection coverage so if you have to rebuild your home and get a new mortgage, it will cover some of those increased costs.  Finally, it includes equipment breakdown coverage for some of your major equipment like your furnace and air conditioner should they break down.

One of the biggest misunderstandings about homeowners insurance is how to insure the home.  Many homeowners and even some agents incorrectly believe that home premiums mimic property values and should be insured for the property value.  Generally speaking, there’s no relation.  Your home should be insured to be rebuilt and remove debris at today’s construction costs.  If you built your home 10 or 20 years ago, the cost to build the same home today is more and likely significantly more due to inflation.  It’s important to have an agent that doesn’t take any shortcuts so you’ll have the coverage you need when you need it.

Term Insurance

Posted on November 7, 2011 by

Less than half of Americans have any sort of life insurance.  Part of the decline is there’s fewer life insurance agents today and with the decline in whole life insurance, it’s difficult for someone to make a living selling term life.  So there’s less exposure to life insurance and it’s more important for a person or family to take the initiative to secure coverage.

A great time to secure life insurance is when you’re relatively young and healthy. You can often lock in 30 year rates for several hundred thousand dollars of coverage for $20-30/mo. If your health changes down the road and you haven’t previously locked in coverage, you may not be able to obtain coverage or it could be significantly more expensive.  An independent agent like myself has access to 25 different life insurers, which gives you lots of options in securing affordable coverage.
